Kumano kodo part.4
From Japan on March 1, 2009After nice night in ryokan I felt very well. New day was great as well. Sunny and warm. It was nice to walk through forest, especially that I have already climbed enough and it was time for more comfortable walk.
I met muh more people walking in groups. Japanese have tendency to walk in groups. Perhaps because it is easier to walk like this and besides they like it. I simply enjoyed Kumano forest, nature, weather, streams and small shrines, jizo statues. Jizo was already my good friend. During my break for lunch (I had some canned food which I bought is small village) I made paper hats for few Jizo statues. They looked cute.
It was good day. I was walking and felt so peaceful. But I made mistake, because I walked too long. I missed sunset time and it started to be dark when i was in the middle of forrest valley, muddy and not good to stay for night. It was really silly. Mountains are dangerous, especially in darkness. It was first time I use this path, so I had no idea what will come next. I was walking with flashligh to find the way. I could loose my path. And it was highest time to find some place to sleep. Wetaher changed and night was cold and it a bit rainy. Such a contrast with last night and comfy ryokan.
I prepared my hammock, when i found food trees close to each other. The worst was rain. Even if I had waterproof sleeping bag and slept under canvas, still it was not nice at all. But I slept like this before so I just had to survive to morning.
There are bears in Kumano forest. So it might be rather risky to sleep like so. But bears never hunt in night but sleep. So I did not feel in danger at all. Perhaps it sounds strange, but I just felt tired. I had to sleep. I could see single, delicate light of glow-worm. I could hear rain and mountain stream, very fast and noisy. I was so tired and sleeping completely dressed. It was hard to take off shoes. I packed them to water proof bag and hang on branch which i could reach sitting in hammock. Shoes are most important during long walk. I always choose the best, even if expensive. It is important investment.
With flash light in my pocket and back pack under my feet, I fell into sleep.
